ISRAEL 11: Tel-Aviv, Oct. 23-26, 2009

The first 28 slides contain a number of photos of buildings built in the "Bauhaus" ("worker house") style. My hotel (Hotel Cinema on Dizengoff Circle) was built in the Bauhaus style in 1939 as a 1,000 seat theater. After the Bauhaus binge, my photos explore Jaffa's old city with Roni and Hadas, then the route from my hotel to the new Tel Aviv Opera building and the expanded Art Museum. 26-SW corner of Shlomo HaMelech at Tel Hai: a building meant to look like a ship, with so-called Mendelsohn balconies (after Eric Mendelsohn, 1887-1953. Mendelsohn lived in the US 1941-1953; taught at UC Berkeley; and designed several US synagogues and Maimonides [later Mount Zion] Hospital in SF, 1950.)
