ISRAEL 7: Haifa, Oct. 18, 2009

On my own, last day in Haifa. Still incredibly hot, but I walked westward 3 km from the Colony Hotel to the cable car station on the Haifa shore. Rode the cable car up to the Carmelite Monastery; rode back down to the National Maritime Museum. Took a bus back to the hotel. After cooling off, I walked eastward to a tiny fish restaurant for a late but wonderful lunch, then made my way by subway to the Carmel. After refreshing at Arcaffe on HaNassi Blvd, I took a cab down the hill to the hotel.

26-Carmelit, upper terminus. The Carmelit opened in 1959; closed in 1986 after showing signs of aging; and reopened in 1992 after extensive renovations.
27-Carmelit, Gan Ha'em (upper terminus). The altitude difference between the first and last stations is 274 meters (a smidgeon under 900 feet).
28-Dante Restaurant on the Carmel, on HaNassi Blvd. Eli, Roni, and Yuval and families hosted a great dinner party here the previous (Saturday) night.
